Our founder Mateo Nazario, grew up as a rebellious artistic kid in New Jersey. Coming from some of history's most resilient groups just made sense. His mother is African American and his father is Puerto Rican. Learning the history of these two groups helped shape his burning fervor for anti-colonialism, black and brown empowerment, and peace through out the African Diaspora. He commonly expressed these themes through his artwork and businesses. Toro Primal Provisions is a case of the latter.

Since the United States took control of Puerto Rico, the island has faced significant challenges in achieving food sovereignty. This struggle can largely be attributed to the colonial influence of the U.S. Policies like Operation Bootstrap and The Jones Act have hindered the development of diverse and nutritious agriculture, promoted industrialization that pulls workers away from farming, and stifled the growth of local businesses by mandating that all imports come via American ships—thus deepening the island’s dependence on the U.S. These factors contribute to the alarming poverty rate, with nearly 40% of Puerto Ricans living in poverty.
